Here is the Kawartha Komets updated schedule showing the most recent change. The Sunday, February 19th INTERMEDIATE/SENIOR game against the Durham Dragons has been cancelled. The Junior Komets are still scheduled to play the Durham Dragons Juniors.

Recently several members of the Kawartha Komets participated in a luncheon where it was announced that local radio station FM 90.5 would be carrying the Toronto Blue Jays radio broadcasts.

Jerry Howarth, the Jays' radio broadcaster, was the keynote speaker. David Fisher, husband of Kawartha Komets founder Carol Fisher, gave thanks for the meal. David, a good friend of Jerry Howarth's, was the Toronto Blue Jays chaplain for 29 seasons.

We received the sweetest Christmas card from one of our new Junior players on Sunday.

Andrew Avery comes up to Peterborough every weekend with his parents Dave & Julie to play with the Kawartha Komets.

Unfortunately Andrew has not been feeling well for the last few days but he took the time to write the card that I've scanned and added to this post.

Komets in Skybox at Petes Game

Fifty-five (55) Kawartha Komets players, parents, coaches and volunteers enjoyed the Peterborough Petes' game on Sunday afternoon in the Skybox at the Peterborough. Memorial Centre.

Selwyn Outreach Centre and Gord McNevan were our generous and gracious hosts and everyone had a fantastic time. Petes' Matt Puempel came up to the Skybox and signed authographs and posed for pictures. Roger, the mascot, came up later to greet the players, pose for pictures and handed out candy canes.

Following the game the Komets joined the Petes on the ice for a Skate With The Petes. One of the highlights (for me) was watching the Petes' Joey West take Megan Chatterton's hand and skate three laps around the rink. Megan is one of two young ladies on the Komets team and she is just learning to skate on her own. She improves noticeably every week.

Each player was presented with a copy of the book Defender of Faith, the Mike Fisher Story, which had been donated by a kind supporter of the Komets.

It was a great afternoon for everyone. Thanks again to the Selwyn Outreach Centre, Pastor Brian Mahood, Gord McNevan, the parents, coaches, volunteers, players and the generous donor of the books!

One of our "star" Kawartha Komets was a speaker at the People First Conference held in Peterborough earlier this year.

Shane Marshall is one of Peterborough's finest citizens and we are proud to say that he is a member of the Komets.

Everyone loves Shane and he did a great job speaking at the Conference.

Nice to see Shane pick up a couple of goals in a recent Komets game! You are our hero, Shane!

This Weekend's Events...An Update

We hope you’re having a good week so far. Today we attended the funeral of our friend and Kawartha Komets board member Mike Mulvaney! What a special man he was! He certainly gave us a lot of support, encouragement, help and expertise in launching the Komets and making sure that we continued to blaze. We will miss him a lot!

PRACTICES THIS SATURDAY...

Even though our schedule shows this Saturday, December 17^th as an “Open” date, we DO have two practices at the Evinrude Centre. The Juniors practice at 11:15 a.m. and the Intermediate/Seniors go at 12:15 p.m. We had hoped to fill that date with a game or two but it was too close to Christmas to schedule games.

ATTENTION COACHES AND VOLUNTEERS...

Please let us know ASAP, either way, if you can make it or not this Saturday. THANK YOU!

THIS SUNDAY IN THE SKYBOX AT THE PETES’ GAME...

We will give you more details, by e-mail, later in the week as to which entrance you can pick up your tickets at. Another item that we should mention that might interest many of the players:

There will be an opportunity for kids and young adults to Skate With the Petes following the game. If you would like to stay after the game to skate, be sure to bring your skates and helmet with you.

As I mentioned...we will give you more details as to where to meet us to pick up your tickets later in the week.

The Komets Lose Friend and Board Member

The Kawartha Komets have lost a wonderful friend, encourager, board member and stalwart supporter. Mike Mulvaney passed away on Thursday, December 8th, 2011.

Mike was "on-board" with the Komets right from the outset of our Special Needs Hockey Program. He gave us such wise counsel as we launched the Komets and served proudly and willingly on our board. Because of Mike's influence we received the backing of the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League (PCCHL). Through his generosity and kindness we were given many hours of free ice time courtesy of Mike and the PCCHL.

In the early days of the Kawartha Komets we were invited to speak at the Scott's Plains Kiwanis Club where Mike was a faithful, committed member. That club got behind the Komets and they were one of our 1st sponsors, helping to launch the program.

Words cannot express how much we will miss Mike, his wise counsel, his friendship and his positive attitude. Mike was loved and respected by many in our community and will be sadly missed.

Our prayers go out to his wife Diane and their children and grandchildren.

Komets Meet Tornadoes

This Saturday, December 10th, the Kawartha Komets will meet the Grandravine Tornadoes at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, home of the Peterborough Petes.

The Juniors will play at 11:00 a.m. and the Intermediate/Seniors will follow at 12:00 noon.

The original schedule showed the Douro Arena as the venue for the games but we will be going 1st-class at the Memorial Centre. Please make note of this change.

This Saturday the Kawartha Komets Juniors will board the Coach Canada bus for Innisfil where we willl play the Innisfil Snowdogs.

For many of our new players (rookies) this will be their first-ever hockey road trip on a big, shiny bus. It's going to be fun!

You notice that the heading of this post says "and girls". We have two girls on our Junior Team this year and we're really excited about that.

Barrie? We will have lunch in Barrie following the game before heading home to Peterborough.

My Own Jersey With My Name On It

There's nothing quite like putting on a hockey jersey with YOUR name on it for the first time. It signifies that you REALLY are a part of the team.

That's how Kawartha Komets' rookie Peter Dykstra felt this morning at the Douro Community Centre and Arena. Peter got to put on his # 23 jersey with DYKSTRA on the back for the 1st time.

As convernors of the Komets Carol and I are just as excited as the kids are when we see the progress they are making. What a difference from one week to the next! We have a great bunch of rookies on the Junior team this season and they are surprising all of us with their weekly improvement.

Keep up the great work guys and girls! Yes, I said "girls"! We have two girls on the team this season. Megan Chatterton and Tamara Brown have donned the red, white and blue Komets colours.

Option B Skate Lacing Alternative

Our good friend Brian Miller, head trainer for the Peterborough Petes Major Junior "A" Hockey Club, has designed an alternative to lacing up skates using Velcro straps. He calls his idea/invention Option B.

Saturday November 19th Practices

This Saturday's practices for the Kawartha Komets will be held at the Douro Community Centre & Arena.

The Juniors will take to the ice at 11:00 a.m. and the Intermediate/Seniors will follow at 12 noon.

Here are the driving instructions:

Douro is located along Rt-28, approx. 15 km northeast of Peterborough and approx. 150 km northeast of Toronto.

From Hwy-7:

Follow Hwy-7 traveling east out of Peterborough (or west from Norwood), to the lights at Hwy-28 (formerly Hwy-134). Turn north. Go to the stop sign at W Nassau Rd, and the Douro Community Centre is on the right. (Arena is located at the intersection of Hwy-28 (formerly Hwy-134) and County Rd. 4.

From the central or north end of Peterborough:

Take Parkhill Road east out of Peterborough (this becomes the Warsaw Road). Follow several kms. to the four-way flashing lights. The arena is on the right.

Petes' Coach Meets the Komets

Today's practices took place at the Peterborough Memorial Centre, home of the Peterborough Petes.

Following the Junior practice Petes' coach Mike Pelino invited the players and their parents into the Petes' dressing room.

He challenged them to always give their best and that playing for fun was the most important thing.

Winning is always nice but it's not the most important thing.

The Komets were excited to see the inside of the Petes' dressing room but, to tell you the truth, the parents seemed just as thrilled.

Thanks, Mike, for taking the time and showing an interest in the Komets. It is much appreciated!

The Kawartha Komets just bought two Ice Scooters from KEZ, a company based in British Columbia.

The molded plastic product is shipped from the manufacturing plant in Pennsylvania.

Our scooters arrived yesterday and they are ideal for children or young people who are just learning to skate.

First Game...Ever

Today (Sunday, November 6th) the Kawartha Komets Juniors played their first game of the season against the Durham Dragons in Ajax.

The Dragons came out breathing fire (just a figure of speech) but the Komets came away victorious (but who was really keeping track).

The goal (no pun intended) was to have fun, lots of it, and these young players were not disappointed.

For several of the Komets this was their first game ever...playing organized hockey for a "real" team.

Liam Black, Andrew Avery and Aaron Thompson (pictured) were excited to suit up for the first time.

It was a great game to watch and now we are counting down to next Saturday's date at the Peterborough Memorial Centre.

Busy Weekend for the Komets

The Kawartha Komets' 2011-2012 season is well underway and this weekend is a busy one. I'm glad we get an extra hour of sleep on Saturday night because we will need it.

The Juniors practice on Saturday morning at 11:15 at the Evinrude Centre and the Intermediate/Seniors follow at 12:15.

On Sunday morning, November 6th, we travel to Ajax to play the Durham Dragons. The Intermediate/Seniors play at 10:00 a.m. on Pad 4 and the Juniors play at 10:30 on Pad 3. Games take place at the Ajax Community Arena.

Last night Carol signed up four (4) new Juniors and fitted them with equipment. We now have a total of 45 players on our Kawartha Komets rosters.

Come out and watch us sometime soon!

Today the Kawartha Komets launched our 3rd season of our special needs hockey program. The Kawartha Komets presently have two teams with a combined roster of 38 players.

We had our first practices of the season today at the Evinrude Centre with 10 new players donning skates and Komets equipment for the 1st time. What a moving experience!

The Kawartha Komets' schedule is almost finalized. For all Komets players and families, we will have a hard copy of the 2011-2012 schedule at our 1st practices at the Evinrude Centre this Saturday morning, October 15th. We are still waiting for a confirmed start time from the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League (PCCHL) and we will e-mail this information to you and post it here as soon as we know the final details.

The earlier start time would be 10:15 and the latest would be 11:15 will the possibility that it could be 10:00 or 11:00. We will let you know. Thanks for your patience.

A Great Sense of Belonging

Every so often we get feedback from some of our Kawartha Komets "family" that really encourages us to keep doing what we've started.

Carol and I share the following comments from one of our parents not because we want any accolades for ourselves but because this is what Kawartha Komets hockey is all about.

A parent writes:

"I think what _______ has gotten the most of from hockey is a great sense of belonging. At school, although he blends in better than most kids on the hockey teams, his "strange" behaviours and repetitive movements etc. make him stand out and the other kids are always commenting on it in a negative way and he is often excluded from birthday parties, games of tag etc. No one at hockey judges him or makes him feel "different" in a negative sense. He is different in a group of different. He really enjoys this sense of belonging. It has become a refuge for positive social interactions. It is very hard to teach social skills to a child who does not understand the basic concepts of them and then when they begin to and try to use these skills they are shot down, teased or bullied. Thanks to you and David for having this hockey team and giving him an opportunity to belong to such a wonderful community. I hope that the parents of the newest members will be able to see all that the Komets have to offer and their children will be able to thrive like ________ has."

Two years ago we met Sharon Fung, founder of the North Bay North Stars, at the Special Hockey International Tournament banquet and we have stayed in touch ever since.

The North Stars are in the running for a $5,000 First Prize in the RBC Play Hockey Contest.

Komets Finish 3rd

Komets finish third in Filmpossible contest

The Kawartha Komets special needs hockey team finished third in the Filmpossible Contest sponsored by the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital.

While final vote tallies were not made public, Komets co-founder Carol Fisher said she was told by organizers the Komets video, Bringing Visibility to Disability, was 50 votes shy of first place.

For their efforts the Komets win an Apple ipad 2. The grand prize was $5,000 and second prize $1,000. Winners were selected through online voting.

"Even thought we didn't win thousands upon thousands of people looked at these videos," said Fisher. "For every vote Holland Bloorview got $1 up to $10,000. They reached their $10,000 goal which is amazing.

We also got to promote Special Hockey International."

The Komets video depicted efforts made by team members to get a young girl from Pittsburgh, who requires an adapted walker to skate, her first goal. She scored against the Komets during the Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston in April.

"We want to thank everyone who faithfully voted for our entry," said Carol's husband and co-founder David Fisher. "Thanks to all of you who asked your friends and contacts to vote for us. We appreciate your support so much. Thank you to Carlo Raponi for putting the footage together so skilfully and to our coaches Dale Lowe and Sean Quinlan for their excellent commentary. Sean, if you hadn't caught the moment on your video camera we couldn't have shared this moving experience with thousands of viewers."

The Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program’s video submission to the Filmpossible Contest sponsored by the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital has been voted one of the six (6) finalists by the judging committee. The entry is entitled Bringing Visibility to Disability.

The objective of the Contest, according to the Holland Bloorview web site, is “to increase awareness of and promote engagement with the issues of childhood disability and to encourage and celebrate those who advocate for childhood disability by sharing their stories.”

The Kawartha Komets submission centers around video footage shot by one of their coaches, Sean Quinlan, at the Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston in April. This entry was put together by videographer Carlo Raponi and includes commentary by Sean Quinlan and another Komets coach, Dale Lowe.

As seen on the video, one of the Komets’ players, Brandon Vansickle, placed the puck on the stick of a Steel City Icebergs (Pittsburgh) player, 5-year-old Nicole Mullins with multiple physical challenges, allowing her to skate down the ice in a special walker fashioned by her father. Players from both teams watched as Nicole took a shot on the Komets goalie, Colin Gillis-Bateman, who plays without a goalie stick. Colin has cerebral palsy on one side of his body as a result of a stroke in utero. Nicole scored her first-ever goal and the crowd went wild.

Voting on the six finalists begins today, August 24^th, and runs for a week ending August 31^st. First prize is $5,000, the 2^nd place winner receives $1,000 and 3^rd prize is an Apple iPad 2.

Nicole Mullins - Steel City Icebergs

Just an update and clarification concerning the video that the Kawartha Komets have submitted to the Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital contest. The contest, entitled Filmpossible, was launched to give Visability to Disability and show how individuals with challenges can be true WINNERS.

This video footage was shot by one of our Kawartha Komets coaches, Sean Quinlan, at the Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston in April of this year. The Komets were playing the Steel City Icebergs from Pittsburgh in our final game of the tournament.

One of our players, Brandon Vansickle, without any prompting or coaching, took the puck and placed it on the stick of Nicole Mullins. Nicole's father fashioned a special walker that enabled her to skate. A stick was attached to the walker. Brandon instinctively saw an opportunity to help an opposing player get a goal. The rest, as they say, is history...dramatically captured on this video. Our goaltender, Colin Gillis-Bateman, does not use a hockey stick as he is paralyzed on one side...from birth. Watch what happens and be moved. Wow!

Surgery Soon

Johnathon Clark and Nathan Fisher

Our star Kawartha Komet Junior, Johnathon Clark, will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday, August 9th @ 11:00 a.m. at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto.

We enjoyed having John and his family over for dinner and a swim in the pool recently.

Please pray for Tim & Judi, Johnathon's parents and for his sister Courtney. Pray especially for Johnathon as he is understandably apprehesive as he anticipates his upcoming brain surgery.

One thing that can be said of the Kawartha Komets family is that we really care about each other.

One of our very special Kawartha Komets players, Johnathon Clark, will be having brain surgery on August 9th @ 11:00 a.m. He has a brain tumour that is growing and needs to be removed. They do not know if it is cancerous or not. This will be a very delicate procedure and Johnathon and his parents, Tim and Judi, would value your prayers.

At times like these the Kawartha Komets are truly "family" and we "come together" to support "one of our own".

Johnathon is such a great, young player and we really enjoy having him on our Kawartha Komets Junior team. Johnathon has expressed his concern to his parents more than once and really hopes that he will still be able to play hockey. We certainly hope that he will be back with us in the fall...better than ever.

So, please pray for Johnathon, Tim and Judi and Johnathon's sister, Courtney. Please let them know that you really care.

A Hockey Moment...That You May Never See Again

As a co-founder with my wife Carol of the Kawartha Komets, we appreciate the dedication of our coaching staff. The following story was written by Dale Lowe...one of the totally committed coaches of the Komets. - David Fisher

Grab a tissue before you read Dale's moving account:

"Anyone who volunteers will tell you that you get back twice as much as what you put into it. And, I've come to learn that even more so over the past 2 years, helping to coach the Kawartha Komets special needs hockey team.

This past week, our 2 local squads participated in the 64-team Special Hockey International tournament. It was my first time to attend the annual year-end event. And, as we boarded the bus early last Wednesday morning for Boston, I knew that I was in for an emotional 5 days of watching special athletes from across the world...playing the game they love so much.

But, nothing had prepared me for the tear that ran down my face on Saturday afternoon.

In special needs hockey, there can often be some disparity between teams because of their wide range of hockey skills and challenges. As the undefeated Junior Komets entered their final game against the Steel City Icebergs (from Pittsburgh), it was clear that our team was faster and more skilled than their opponents. And (realizing this) our juniors quickly adapted their game...showing a tremendous amount of empathy for the Icebergs. Then, the most incredible spontaneous act of sportsmanship happened in front of the Steel City net.

Brandon Vansickle (# 58) of the Kawartha Komets gave the puck to 5 year-old Nicole Mullins of the Icebergs. As you will see in the video, Nicole uses a special-made walker created by her father, fully equipped with her hockey stick. Nicole was born with hip dysplasia...meaning she has two dislocated hips, two short-bent femurs, and two club feet. But, special needs hockey has allowed her to be part of a team...and allowed this tiny, courageous and very determined girl to achieve her goals.

After Brandon put the puck on Nicole's stick, the entire Komet line skated the length of the ice beside her, and watched her score a goal...as fans from both sides cheered wildly. Afterwards, there were tears running down the cheeks of many of us who had witnessed this unprompted, unscripted act of sportsmanship. I have never been so proud to be part of a sports program.

I should also mention that the Senior Komets showed remarkable sportsmanship too. Entering their final game (undefeated as well)...they met the undefeated Washington Ice Dogs. The level of competition was quite intense and spirited in a game that saw each team hold the lead at various times.

And, although the Komets lost the game on the scoreboard (8-5)....they proved that sometimes the team that LOSES looks like the WINNERS...through their on-ice actions. Our boys were able to display an incredible amount of respect and sportsmanship in that defeat....and we are all so proud of them for representing Peterborough so well.

And so...we've packed up our memories in equipment bags for another season - - with the anticipation of creating even more special moments next year - - as the Kawartha Komets continue to “blaze a trail” in special needs hockey."

Wow! What a busy weekend it's been. The Kawartha Komets completed a successful (and fun) Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston winning 7 of 8 games.

Some of our opponents congratulated us following our games for exhibiting good sportsmanship. Others were amazed that the Komets have only been playing as a team(s) for two seasons.

The players bonded well during our time away and we are looking forward to a successful 3rd season next fall.

We leave for Peterborough Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. in the capable hands of Harley, our Coach Canada driver!

CONGRATULATIONS, KOMETS! You made us proud!

After two days of competition at the Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston, both Kawartha Komets teams remain undefeated.

Each team has played three games with the final two games being played Saturday before the closing banquet and awards presentation.

Shane Clapper stole the spotlight for the Seniors with a 5 goal performance Friday afternoon.

The Komets enjoyed a visit to the New England Aquarium on Thursday morning.

They’ll leave for home on Sunday morning, a tired but happy bunch of guys.

We Have Landed

The Kawartha Komets landed safely in Boston today at 6:30 after a long bus ride east on the 401, south on I-81 and then east again on I-90. We had 45 on board the Coach Canada bus, two flew in from California and another 16 drove down bringing to total Komets Kontingent to 63 (if my math is correct).

Tomorrow morning we will visit the New England Aquarium and then play our first two games at 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

After getting up at 5:00 this morning we are ready to call it a day. Tomorrow will come too soon!

New England Sports Center where we play

The countdown to Boston is getting lower every day. 9 days from today and we're on our way. It's exciting! Lots of hard work making the final arrangements but it's nothing compared to what the organizers in Boston area are dealing with. With 64 teams converging on the Boston area, scheduling must have been a nightmare.

Inside the 6-pad Sports Complex

We have our preliminary schedule in hand. We're hoping to make one scheduling change if possible. Looks like we're going to be playing the Washington Ice Dogs and the Rochester Ice Cats. We're also facing off against the Colorado Golden Eagles, the N. Y. Raptors, the Mississauga Crusaders and the Michigan MORC Stars.

Before we leave CHEX TV here in Peterborough is doing a Newswatch Special on the Kawartha Komets that will air on Easter Monday, April 25th at 5:30 p.m.

The Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program has been busy for the past few months raising money to BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON.

On Saturday, April 2^nd, the Komets gathered at the Sport Chek store in Lansdowne Place to receive a generous donation which put their fundraising campaign “over the top”.

Sport Chek stores operate as part of The Forzani Group Ltd. based in Calgary, AB. The sponsorship was part of their “Power of Sport for Kids” program.

According to their web site, "The Forzani Group Ltd. is proud of the Power of Sport for Kids community giving program. Introduced through Sport Chek stores nationally in October 2005, its purpose is to provide opportunities for sports, play and physical activity to deserving children who may not otherwise have the resources to take part. This is a program that benefits children and provides them with the chance to experience the joy of an active lifestyle."

The Kawartha Komets will be sending 24 players and their families to the Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston, April 28^th – 30^th, leaving on the 27^th and returning home May 1^st.

The Komets, formed in April 2009, completed their 2^nd season last Saturday with both teams winning their games at Grandravine in Toronto.

Komets Join SHI

Here is a bit of history concerning the early beginnings of SHI:

Pat Flick who had been involved with minor hockey since 1970, notices a young boy who always came out to rink but only to watch his brother. He discovers that he is developmentally challenged. So with the help of the Grandravine Athletic Association he arranges some ice time and with just 2 players the Grandravine Tornadoes is born.

In 1992 while waiting for his flight at Toronto International Airport, Tony Sansone reads about Pat’s team and dreams of starting a similar program in St. Louis. For 2 years he struggles to find the ice time necessary. Finally in January of 1994, with the help of Kelly Chase of the St. Louis Blues, Tony launches the Gateway Locomotives. On Thanksgiving weekend , he invites Pat Flick and the Grandravine Tornadoes to St. Louis for a two team tournament.

In 1995 St. Louis again hosts their Thanksgiving tournament with 2 new clubs joining Grandravine and the host Gateway Locomotives. They are the Durham Dragons and the Ottawa Valley Ambassadors.

In 1996 Special Hockey International is officially launched, with Pat Flick as commissioner and Tony as President. They establish an annual tournament to be hosted by different teams each. St. Louis hosted the first annual SHI tournament and then alternated between US and Canadian cities.

In 2002 Mike Dwyer makes SHI truly international by starting a team in London. The Werewolves of London are a part of Streatham Youth Hockey Club in London, England.

This Saturday at Grandravine

(PETERBOROUGH) Win, lose or draw, the final score isn't important.

Players aren't ridiculed for missing a sure goal, blowing defensive coverage or for allowing a soft goal. There are no power-play or penalty-killing units. Equal ice time is a priority and statistics aren't recorded.

The Kawartha Komets special needs hockey team play because they love the game.

"They are like every other kid and want to be like the NHL guys," explains Komets coach Brad Bateman.

Bateman says he's coached kids that were extremely talented but didn't have half the heart of the Komets players.

"I coach other sports, but the great thing about these guys is they have such big hearts. Even for them to get out on the ice and to get their equipment on is a big challenge," he explains.

Batemen's son Colin Gillis-Bateman blocks shots for the Komets. Colin had a stroke shortly after birth.

"They basically told us he would never walk. They told us the chances of him doing anything normal were pretty slim," explains Bateman.

The caused limited use of his right hand, which in return forces the 11 year old to play goalie without a stick. Mr Bateman and Ralph Beavis, of Nash Sports, customized a blocker this year, so Colin could hold a stick, but the netminder found it easier to go without.

"When he was a little kid he always played road hockey without a stick and did really well," says Bateman.

"It did work a little bit for him, but Colin found it was harder for him to play with the stick because he never really did play with the stick."

Bateman says most parents on the team will tell you the same story. That they thought their child would never play hockey.

"It brings tears to my eyes seeing him do something that we didn't expect him to be able to do," says Judi Clark, mother of 11-year-old Johnathon Clark, a forward with the Komets.

Two years ago Johnathon went to school feeling fine, but came home with a serve headache. A CAT scan revealed he had a dermoid cyst.

"My heart sank to my toes. It was devastating," says Ms Clark.

Johnathon also has cranial nerve cerebral palsy and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

"He has trouble learning and interacting with kids his own age," explains Ms Clark.

"It (hockey) has brought up his self esteem and it gives him something to look forward to."

Johnathon scored his first hat trick this year.

"It is fun and a great sport that brings people together," says Johnathon.

"I enjoy meeting new people and actually getting to play with them."

Cheryl Stephens says her son Travis Harren didn't have a lot of friends his own age until he joined the Komets. Ms Stephens home schools her son, who developed hydrocephalus, an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles, or cavities, of the brain, when he was six weeks old. At the age of six he was diagnosed with epilepsy.

"I run a daycare, so he knows younger kids very well and he knows adults very well, but he doesn't know teenagers. With hockey he is out with teenagers. Some of them are younger but they are his developmental age, so he fits in," explains Ms Stephens.

Carol Fisher says parents put their children in this program for the social aspect.

"As children with challenges get older the gaps get bigger and they start to experience loneliness and depression," explains Ms Fisher.

"This is a whole new avenue for them to connect with people, which I think is a bigger part of it than the actual hockey."

Carol and her husband David founded the Komets in 2009/10 and iced 22 skaters. The Komets grew to 34 players this year, but Ms Fisher says their job isn't done, as they wish to expand and include more people that have developmental issues such as players with Down Syndrome.

"We haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg," she explains.

The Komets wrap up their season at the end of April when they charter a bus to Boston to participate in the annual Special Hockey International Tournment. The mailman has been good to us this week. Yesterday my $100.00 Tim's Card arrived in the mail, a RRROLL UP THE RIM prize that I (David) won several weeks ago when returning from the Kawartha Komets game against the Durham Dragons.

Today we received a sponsorship cheque from the Tim Hortons store at Monaghan & Lansdowne Streets in Peterborough.

Thanks to the owner (Brian Howe), management (Erika Howe-Gallagher) and staff at Tim Hortons for joining the Komets' team. Actually one of the staff at that location, Jonathon Genereaux, plays for the Komets and does a great job promoting our cause.

Kawartha Komets Night at Petes Game

Magnetic Personalities

Our Kawartha Komets Night at the Peterborough Petes game on Wednesday evening was a resounding success. Everything went off without a hitch. The players enjoyed their 3-4 minutes of fame as they scrimmaged on Memorial Centre ice between the 1st and 2nd periods.

We raised more money for our BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON campaign and watched 2/3 of the Petes' final regular season home game.

Thanks to all who made the night a success including our board member and Petes' play-by-play announcer Pete Dalliday who snapped this photo of Nathan Fisher with two ushers holding up Kawartha Komets magnets which were given out to the fans.

Practice Makes Perfect

We have added two more practices in April but these are just for the players who are going to Boston.

We will be at the Kinsmen Arena on Saturday April 2nd from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and the following Saturday, April 9th we'll be at the Kinsmen again from 11:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

We'll be working on our skills for Boston and figuring out line combinations for our guys.

Kawartha Komets Night with the Petes

This Wednesday, March 16th at 7:00 p.m. there will be three great teams playing the exciting game of hockey at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. The Peterborough Petes take on the Niagara Ice Dogs in the Petes' final home game of the regular season.

It's Kawartha Komets Night and the Komets will take to the ice between the 1st and 2nd periods to showcase their skills. Prior to the game members of the Komets will be greeting fans at the arena entrances and handing out FREE Komets fridge magnets.

Tickets for the game can be purchased at the reduced rate of $12.00 per person if you mention the code word "KOMETS". $2.00 from the sale of these tickets will go directly to the Kawartha Komets to help BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON. Blodgett and Bruce Board the Bus for Boston

Recently Peter Blodgett and his great staff at Darling Insurance in Peterborough boarded the bus for Boston. Peter made a HUGE donation to the Kawartha Komets to help in our BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON campaign.

Peter is well known in the Peterborough area as a man who cares for his community and his generosity has benefited many over the years.

Peter is 1/3 of the Three Loonies who annually raise buckets full of money for local charities during their Christmas season fundraising blitz on George Street. This year Peter, Bruce Fitzpatrick and Bob McGillen collected thousands of dollars for Kawartha Food Share.

Bruce Fitzpatrick, local lawyer, also jumped on board recently and gave the Komets a very generous boost to get us to Boston. Thanks, Bruce!

Undercover Fundraisers

On Thursday, March 3rd, the Kawartha Komets were invited to East Side Mario's Restaurant on Lansdowne Street in Peterborough for a cheque presentation to help BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON.

Without our knowledge Matt & Dianne Kraft and their great staff had been soliciting support for the Komets from their customers for the past few weeks.

In exchange for a donation of $5.00 towards the Komet's upcoming trip to Boston, customers received a $5.00 coupon, good for a future visit to East Side Mario's.

What a pleasant surprise when we were called and asked to come in and receive a cheque!

Many thanks to the management and staff at East Side Mario's. The best way to thank our friends Matt & Dianne is to drop by and enjoy a great meal...and say a big Komets' THANK YOU!

Power of Kids 4 Sport Program

The Kawartha Komets have been in touch with The Forzani Group Ltd. regarding their Power of Sport 4 Kids Program.

It sounds like they believe in what groups like our Kawartha Komets are doing. We will keep you posted regarding the possibility of funding for our hockey program through this group.

FISHER TRADED!

Headlines we thought we'd never see. Today Mike Fisher was traded by the woefully inept Ottawa Senators to the Nashville Predators. I can only imagine how disappointed thousands of Ottawa fans will be. Maybe "angry" would be a better word. Fisher was likely the most popular Senator. Loved by all.

Now he joins his bride Carrie Underwood in Nashville which seems like an ideal situation. But...trades are always difficult. Mike has never had to deal with being uprooted before...being a lifetime Senator...until today. Mike will weather the storm well and "shine" in Nashville!

Peterborough Petes & Kawartha Komets Team Up

As most of you know, the Kawartha Komets is a special hockey team for girls, boys, teens and adults with physical, emotional and/or neurodevelopmental challenges.

David & Carol Fisher launched this program in April of 2009 and there are now 2 teams, a Junior team and an Intermediate/Senior team with a total of 40 players.

The Kawartha Komets are presently raising money to send the teams to Boston, MA from April 27th - May 1st for the Annual Special Hockey International Tournment. The Komets have chartered a Coach Canada bus and are making final arrangements with the hotel in the Boston area. A number of fund-raising events have already been held and they still have a ways to go to achieve their goal of $13,000. They presently have raised $8,500.

On Wednesday, March 16th, 2011 it willl be Kawartha Komets Night at the Peterborough Petes game against the Niagara Ice Dogs at the Peterborough Memorial Centre. This is the last game of the Petes' regular season and is in the middle of the March Break.
The Komets players, decked out in their jerseys, will be greeting fans at each arena entrance, giving out a Komets' promotional item to each person. Between the 1st and 2nd period there will be a brief scrimmage with some of the Kawartha Komets players showcasing their skills.

The SPECIAL ADMISSION PRICE that night for those who wish to support the Kawartha Komets will be $12.00 per person. This price is for all regular seating (not club seats or nosebleed section) in the Memorial Centre. When ordering your tickets online or picking them up at the box office please quote the special price code - KOMETS (that's Komets with a K). When you mention KOMETS you will get your ticket for $12.00 and $2.00 of the ticket price will automatically go to the Komets' BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON fund-raising campaign.

This will be your last opportunity to see a regular season Petes' game this season and it's in the middle of March break so the children won't have to worry about getting up for school the next day.

Filling the Net?

The Kawartha Komets' star defenceman Bruce Saltern switched jerseys this afternoon as the Conservative All-Stars did battle with the United Way All-Stars in local MP Dean Del Mastro's Annual Fund-Raiser for the United Way campaign.

Several Komets players were on hand to cheeer Bruce along. No boos were allowed. I'm convinced that Bruce the Juice, as he is fondly called, was the star of the game. He certainly had the most fans. The Komets chanted "We Want Bruce" and convinced the coach to get him back on the ice before he had chugged his between-shifts gulps of water.

We had lovingly encouraged Bruce to "fill the net" with pucks (of course). With the game winding down and the Conservative All-Stars trailing 11-8, Bruce was awarded a penalty shot. We knew he'd score! Bruce always does! The puck was placed at center ice. Our man circled around, picked up the puck and rushed towards the opponent's net. A quiet hush filled the arena. Bruce wound up and shot...wide...but wound up in the net himself. The crowd went wild! Our man had done what we had asked him to do. Fill the net.

Following the game Bruce whispered his secret to his admirers. The coach has asked him to sliiiiiiiiiiide into the net...making the goaltender leave his crease.

Guess what? The official scorekeeper allowed the goal. It wasn't enough to give the Tories a win but the fans left the building with a smile on their faces.

Bruce wasn't the first hockey star to fill the net. We scooped some photos from our archives of other stars who chased goalies from their creases.

Bruce, you're our man! We love you! You gave your ALL! You filled the net and made us smile!

The Kawartha Komets showcased their talents on Saturday, January 29th at the Under the Lock Tournament on the Trent Canal.

The Durham Dragons provided the opposition but the Komets continued their winning ways under sunny skies. The weather couldn't have been better for all the teams involved.

Kudos to Dave Smith and his team of dedicated volunteers for putting this fantastic event together.

Cheque Received

On Friday evening the Kawartha Komets received a generous cheque from the organizers of the 53rd Annual Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament to be used to BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON. Our Junior goaltender Colin Gillis-Bateman was on hand with us at the Evinrude Centre to receive the cheque. The Kawartha Komets were the charity of choice for this year's Atom Tournament.

The Kawartha Komets wish to thank the organizers of this prestigious tournament for believing in us and choosing to support us.

Here's an excerpt from the Peterborough Examiner's coverage in today's paper:

"Tournament executive Marc Oddie was the master of ceremonies and he introduced MP Dean Del Mastro, MPP Jeff Leal and Mayor Daryl Bennett, who all spoke, to begin proceedings which started about 45 minutes before game time.

Executive member Brian Johnson introduced Frank Lustic Memorial Award winner Cliff Gilmoure, who was joined by his wife Shirley and members of the Lustic family, including Frank's sons Darrel and Ron and widow Pat.

The Lustic award is presented annually to a person for volunteer work in and dedication to the Peterborough Community Church Hockey League or the tournament.

Executive Wayne Carter then presented a cheque to the tournament's charity of choice this year, the Kawartha Komets Hockey Club, a not-for-profit organization to give girls and boys, teens and adults with physical, emotional and/or neurodevelopmental challenges a chance to play hockey.

On hand were Komets founders David and Carol Fisher and goaltender Colin Gillis-Bateman."

Grandravine Road Trip a Snowy Success

Today's Kawartha Komets' road trip to play the Grandravine Tornadoes in Toronto was a success in spite of the messy weather conditions as we made our way there.

We passed many cars in the ditch, a jack-knifed tractor trailer and several emergency vehicles rushing to various accidents.

Getting to the Grandravine Arena on time was a challenge but we managed to ice a Junior team at 11 a.m. with a few Intermediates/Seniors mixed in.

We won both games today and enjoyed a more relaxed drive home.

Next weekend we practice at Northcrest Arena on Sunday morning.

Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament

The organizers of the Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey Tournament announced that the Kawartha Komets are their charity of choice for this year's 53rd annual tournament.

Whatever amount we receive from the tournament will be used for our efforts to BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON.

The Original Komet (I Mean Comet)

Apparently the original Komet was a reindeer who played 2nd fiddle to Rudolph. Actually his name was misspelled as "Comet".

Here's some history on the "original" Komet:

"Comet was named after the Comet Blorouis which appeared in the sky many years ago. The comet was so bright that it lit up the North Pole at night.

Comet’s teacher in Reindeer School says he is the brightest student she has ever taught. He gets straight A’s in every subject. He will become the first reindeer to make the Honor Roll.

He has made his parents and Santa so proud this year. When he grows up he wants to be a teacher so he can pass on all of his knowledge."

Practice Makes Perfect

As the old saying goes, "Practice makes perfect." I've also heard another line lately. I've heard that our Intermediate/Senior team is undefeated this season. A perfect record. While that is true, it's more important that we are having a good time and teaching life lessons to our players. Like..."winning isn't everything" and "it doesn't matter whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game."

Enough philosophizing (sp?)...

Tomorrow (Saturday, December 18th) we have our final practice before Christmas. Actually it's the first practice we've had since October.

Both teams, Junior and Intermediate/Senior will meet at the Evinrude Centre at 10:15 a.m. We'll have some casual skate time, work on some skills and then divide into two teams and have a fun-filled scrimmage.

Komet Krazy Kid

This kid loves playing Komets hockey. You kan tell by the expression on his face, kan't you! He's actually krazy about the Komets.

His name is Johnathon Clark and he suits up every week for the Komets...so proud to be one of our players!

Kan you believe it? We have 37 Komets players and the numbers are rising.

I'm so excited that I kan't even spell anymore. All the words that start with "c" are getting "k's" instead. Krazy!

And, just to avoid any misunderstandings...Johnathon is NOT krazy. He just loves his Komets.

And...to top things off...Johnathon picked up two goals in the Junior Komets' victory over the Don Mills Diamonds in Don Mills. KONGRATULATIONS, Johnathon!

The Kawartha Komets shone brightly at the Evinrude Centre Tuesday.

The hockey team, featuring players with special needs, put on a five-minute exhibition before the more than 300 fans who attended the OJHL game between the Peterborough Liftlock Stars and Lindsay Muskies, won by the Stars 5-4.

The Komets team features 36 players altogether and 18 made it Tuesday to showcase their abilities on ice during the first intermission.

The Stars donated proceeds of the game to the Komets Bus The Boys To Boston campaign, to take part in the Special Hockey International Tournament April 28-20.

According to David Fisher, founder/coordinator with his wife Carol -of the Komets, $2,400 was raised between gate receipts and a silent auction, which featured an autographed jersey donated by the Ottawa Senators Mike Fisher, a Stars alumnus and honorary Komets captain; a framed Roger Neilson print and an autographed Carrie Underwood CD.

"The Stars bent over backwards to support us," said Fisher. "They were very accommodating. Our players were off the wall in the dressing room, they were so excited. It was a great night because we had a lot of fans with Peterborough playing Lindsay."

The Stars were happy to be part of the night and help out.

"We believe in this kind of organization and giving back," said Stars GM Scott Donato. "We do the best we can to help and this is going to help a team get to Boston. They are a young team and it gives them exposure. It's another group Peterborough can be proud of. It was good to have it when Lindsay was in. It's a good rivalry."

Fisher said the tournament in Boston would likely attract more than 100 teams, with 30 teams registered in Canada and 80 in the United States. He said there were also teams in England, Russia and Sweden.

"It's a great time for bonding and camaraderie among the players," he said. "We play four or five games but no one cares about the scores or winning. It's being there and part of it. It will be a 13-hour bus ride and a lot of fun."

In the OJHL encounter, Rickey Buehler scored three goals for the Stars, including the winner, a power play tally to snap a 4-4 deadlock at seven minutes of the third period. Turner Evans and Mike Hennessey had the others.

Andrew Darrigo, Brian Hubers, Jake Taylor, Buehler, Troy Barss, Peter Rennie and Hennessey drew assists. Reid Oliver scored two goals, Matt Davis and Joel Wetmore singles for the Muskies. Steve Taylor earned three assists.

The Stars outshot the Muskies 36-35 with Zac Fryia besting Luke Bierworth in goal. The Stars host Dixie at 7 p.m. Friday.

Kold Komets

The Kawartha Komets received some additional public exposure on Saturday evening, December 4th as our float traveled down George Street during the 37th Annual Santa Claus Parade convened by The Kinsmen Club of Peterborough, one of the Komets' sponsors.

I forgot to take my camera so we don't have any shots of our float. We had an excellent turnout of players and parents who braved the elements and rode down George Street.

By the time Santa arrived we were all frozen. It's was fun though! The kids and old folks (like me) had a great time!

Many thanks to the parents of our player Chris Tuck...Dave and Cathie Tuck...for decorating the float and making sure that everything was in place. You did a great job!

Please note the time change for our games in Don Mills on December 11th, 2010. The start time for the Junior game will be 1:50 p.m. instead of 3:05 p.m. and the Intermediate/Senior game will start at 2:45 p.m. instead of 4:00 p.m.

The Kinsmen Club of Peterborough Climbs Onboard

The Kawartha Komets Special Needs Hockey Program is pleased to announce that the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough has agreed to be one of our proud sponsors.

We look forward to our partnership with the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough and appreciate the excellent work they do in our community and area.

The Kawartha Komets will participate in the Santa Claus Parade in Peterborough on Saturday, December 4th beginning at 4:45 p.m. This is the 37th Annual Santa Claus Parade, sponsored by and convened by the Kinsmen Club of Peterborough.

Liftlock Stars Game - December 7th, 2010

Two of our sponsors, Cathcart Trucking and the Liftlock Stars, are teaming up to promote our Kawartha Komets. Our friend Bryan Cathcart, owner of Cathcart Trucking and the Liftlock Stars Junior "A" Hockey Club, has kindly offered to showcase the Kawartha Komets at the Stars game on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Evinrude Centre.

The Stars will be facing off against arch-rivals, the Lindsay Muskies.

Gate receipts from the game will go to the Kawartha Komets to help BUS THE BOYS TO BOSTON for our Special Hockey International Tournament in Boston, April 28 - 30, 2011.

The Kawartha Komets will stage a brief scrimmage between the 1st and 2nd periods that evening.

Come out and support three great area teams...the Liftlock Stars, the Lindsay Muskies and the Kawartha Komets.

Newmarket Nighthawks

The Newmarket Nighthawks provided the opposition as the Kawartha Komets continued their winning ways on Saturday at the Evinrude Centre. The Komets took both the Junior and Intermediate/Senior games.

But even though the Komets are undefeated, we want to stress something that's very important. Winning isn't everything for the Komets. It's great to win but...the most important aspect of Special Hockey International is that the players have FUN...LOADS OF FUN...and that they feel welcomed, affirmed, important and special.

Our games have been VERY entertaining! It's exciting hockey! We are seeing the skill levels improving but, again, we are most excited to see the camaraderie that is building between players, coaches, volunteers, parents and families.

If you haven't been out to the Evinrude to catch a game...you're missing something! See you next Saturday as we take on the Grandravine Tornadoes.
